The JWP Bulldog Softball team navigated a rollercoaster week on the diamond, proving they can win in every fashion—from offensive shootouts to marathon extra-inning duels. After a hard-fought victory over NRHEG and a tough lesson against a powerhouse Randolph squad, the Bulldogs found their rhythm in Rochester to finish the stretch with two thrilling victories. .
The week kicked off with a back-and-forth affair against the NRHEG Panthers on April 20. Lyla Simonson took the mound for JWP, flashing high heat early to rack up seven strikeouts over a complete seven-inning performance.
The Panthers struck first in the opening frame, but the Bulldogs responded immediately in the bottom of the first. Following a leadoff single by Raylen Blasing, Sophie Okins and Brielle James delivered timely knocks to give JWP a 2-1 lead. After NRHEG clawed back to tie the game at 2-2 and eventually take a 3-2 lead in the fourth, the Bulldog bats erupted.
In the bottom of the fourth, JWP staged a decisive four-run rally. Simonson sparked the inning with a hard liner to left, followed by a walk from Hudson Miller to load the bases. Blasing then delivered the biggest blow of the day, a two-RBI single over second base. A sacrifice fly from Haylee Appel and a heads-up slide at home by Blasing capped the scoring, pushing the lead to 6-3. Despite a late Panther run, JWP secured the 6-4 win to move to 5-3 on the season.
Weather and Rockets Ground Bulldogs
The momentum hit a snag against the Randolph Rockets in a 10-0 shutout on April 23. Battling fierce winds that wreaked havoc with fly balls and defensive communication, the Bulldogs struggled to find their footing. While the bats were held quiet for much of the game, Blasing remained a bright spot, going 2-for-3 with another stolen base.
Coach Eldred noted the physical and mental hurdles of the contest: “Tough loss with some windy balls in the air and miscommunications. However, they put the bat on the ball, which was impressive. We need to get stronger physically and mentally… we were a few errors shy of staying with them for seven innings.”
Marathon in Rochester: The 10-Inning Thriller
JWP traveled to Rochester on April 25 and participated in one of the most exciting games of the season against Lake City. Tied 3-3 heading into the late frames, the game stretched deep into extra innings as both defenses refused to blink.
Finally, in the bottom of the 10th, Blasing played the hero, driving in the winning run with an RBI single to secure the walk-off victory. Langford was unstoppable at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3, while Simonson provided seven strong innings of pitching and an RBI of her own.
Closing the Door on the Rockets
The Bulldogs finished the Rochester tournament with a pulse-pounding 3-2 win over the John Marshall Rockets. JWP built an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by a towering triple from Sophie Okins that nearly cleared the fence.
John Marshall mounted a late comeback, scoring solo runs in the sixth and seventh, but pitcher Rhyleigh Donner slammed the door shut. Donner finished her complete-game performance with a game-ending strikeout to preserve the one-run lead. Offensively, Langford, Lily Quast, and Hudson Miller all turned in multi-hit performances.
Looking Ahead
With a 3-1 record over their last four games, the Bulldogs are finding their stride as they compete with the region’s best. The schedule ahead may seem short, but Gopher Conference games against the Triton Cobras on April 27th and the USC Rebels on April 30th promise to push this JWP squad to its limits.
