The St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran (SC-IL) Cyclones track and field program didn’t just compete this past week—they made history. In a span of seven days, three separate school records were shattered, capped off by a monumental performance at the program’s first-ever home meet.
Blooming Prairie: Records and Resilience
The week began with a statement performance at the Blooming Prairie meet on April 21. The Cyclones showed up in force, with the girls claiming the top spot over JWP/WEM (144 to 133) and the boys taking a strong second place with 112 points.
Kate Daly provided the highlight of the day in the Pole Vault. Daly cleared a staggering 10’7”, surpassing her older sister Madison’s previous school record. To put that height in perspective, it is seven inches higher than a regulation basketball hoop—a feat of nerve that saw her defeat the field by over 2.5 feet. The records continued on the track as Oliver Schull blazed his way through the 200M Dash. Schull clocked a 22.5, shaving a tenth of a second off the previous record of 22.64. Schull was a force all afternoon, also claiming gold in the 100M.
Additional Boys Highlights (Blooming Prairie):
- Relays: The super speed squad of Schull, Will Goosen, Huntly Lentz, and Wyatt Lien dominated the 4×100, winning by a massive 3.5 seconds.
- Distance: Carson Goodrich (2nd) and Rollie Matejcek (4th) paced the 1600M, while Matejcek added a 3rd place finish in the 3200M.
- Field: Hunter Winkler took 2nd in Triple Jump, while Wyatt Lien (High Jump) and Jack Roemhildt (Discus) secured podium spots.
Additional Girls Highlights (Blooming Prairie):
- Relays: The 4×800 team (Quast and Loeslie siblings) won by 26 seconds. The 4×200 team (Busse, Carstensen, DeMartini, Hinze) provided the drama of the day, edging out the JWP-WEM Bulldogs by just half a second.
- Distance/Sprints: Valerie Quast won the 1600M, while Makiah Loeslie and Kaitlyn Anderson finished in a dead heat in the 400M.
A Historic Homecoming
History was made again on April 25 as the Cyclones hosted their first-ever home meet. Under the bright lights of a brand-new track, both teams finished second out of four schools, trailing only powerhouse Fairmont.
The home crowd was treated to the week’s third record-breaking performance. The girls’ 4×800 relay team—comprising the Loeslie and Quast sisters—didn’t just win; they obliterated the field. Finishing nearly a full minute ahead of their nearest competitor, their time of 10:14.60 etched a new mark in the SC-IL history books.
Boys Results: Oliver Schull continued his dominance, sweeping the 100M and 200M. Wyatt Lien and Huntly Lentz followed closely in the 100M (3rd and 4th). The 4×100 relay team repeated their success with a thrilling victory over Fairmont. In the field, Busse claimed 1st in Long Jump, while Hunter Winkler and Wyatt Lien took 2nd and 3rd in a competitive High Jump.
Girls Results: The Cyclones dominated the Triple Jump, taking the top four spots (Janessa Carstensen, Sreya Freitag, Brooklin Hinze, and Kaitlyn Anderson). Valerie Quast maintained her distance dominance with a 1600M win by 30 seconds, while Anderson, Delilah Quast, and Aleya Loeslie swept the 800M podium. In the hurdles, Hinze and Busse went 1-2 in the 300M event.
The Road Ahead
It has been a remarkable week of growth for the SC-IL program. The names Schull, Daly, Quast, and Loeslie are now immortalized in the school’s record books, but the season is far from over.
The Cyclones hit the road this coming week with a grueling schedule:
- April 28: at LCWM
- April 30: at Tri-City United
- May 1: at Fairmont
With the momentum of three records and a successful home debut, the Cyclones are proving they are a class of athletes ready for the next level.
