It’s official. After many years of serving Janesville, the Mayo Clinic, located at 312 N. Main Street, has closed permanently.
The Mayo Clinic had unexpectedly closed in August of last year, but it was a “temporary closure” due to a “staffing situation.”
All patients that usually went to Janesville were to call the Janesville office and either be redirected to the Waseca or Mankato clinics.
It was then announced via a press release by the Mayo Clinic Health System that the Janesville location will not reopen. While the clinic was deemed temporarily closed, all Janesville staff were relocated to Waseca. Since the closure became permanent, all staff will continue working at the Waseca clinic.
The press release states, “Janesville clinic patients have been receiving care 10 miles away at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waseca or 18 miles away at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato for the past six months. Patients also have access to many convenient care options beyond traditional face-to-face visits, including the newly launched Primary Care On Demand app, virtual appointments, Nurse Line, and the patient portal.”
“Consistent with our primary value, our goals are to provide better-coordinated care, address workforce shortages, and meet our patients’ changing healthcare needs,” says Travis Paul, regional chair of administration, Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota.
All patients who received their care in Janesville will be contacted by the Mayo Clinic Health System and will “receive support to transition their care.”
Shortly before the clinic’s closure became permanent, the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton school district committed time to look into bringing in a school-based health center; due to lack of space in the school, one option they considered was having the health center in the Janesville clinic and having Mayo Clinic Health System sponsor it. With the clinic closed, it’s unclear whether or not that option is still on the table.
With the Mayo Clinic officially shut down in Janesville, many residents may wonder where to get their healthcare. The only place left in town that provides health services is the Heartland Clinic, which has only been open for a few months.
