With the regular season right around the corner, the St. Clair/Loyola (SCL) Spartans took to the field for a crucial Week Zero scrimmage, testing their mettle against opposing competition in a structured 20-play offensive and defensive format against squads from Cotter and Blue Earth Area.
For coaching staffs and players alike, Week Zero provides an invaluable tool for evaluation. Beyond the scoreboards, these live-action snaps offer a real-time canvas for roster construction, tactical adjustments, and building early-season chemistry.
Opening their first offensive set against the Cotter Ramblers, SCL immediately established a rhythm. The Spartans leaned into their ground attack early, setting the tone with a slick end-around that broke into the secondary for a generous gain.
Under center, quarterback Freitag demonstrated poise and clear determination to command the offense. Freitag quickly unlocked the passing game, delivering a sharp ball downfield to his wideout for another explosive play. Moments later, the drive capped off in style with a swing pass into the flat—the receiver Wilmes executed a crisp inside cut before using raw speed to outrun the defense into the end zone.
The Spartans continued to mix up their scheme effectively. A hard-nosed run up the middle by the SCL back set up play-action, allowing Freitag to boot out of the pocket and find Wilmes for another solid gain. Later in the set, Freitag showcased his deep-ball accuracy, lofting a high-arching pass deep downfield. A spectacular catch by Cumberland set SCL up with first-and-goal.
To finish off the opening set, Freitag took matters into his own hands, tucking the ball on a scramble and using his legs to break open for a rushing touchdown—marking two scores for the Spartans’ opening 20-play window.
During their second offensive set, SCL faced tougher resistance from the Cotter defense as passing lanes tightened. However, the unit capped the sequence with a dramatic highlight when Freitag launched a deep heave into the end zone, connecting with McClinton for a touchdown strike.
When SCL shifted into defensive mode for their 20-play set against Cotter, the unit faced a physical challenge. The Ramblers’ bruising ground attack proved difficult to contain early on, creating leverage at the line of scrimmage. Cotter quickly followed up with a pass over the middle that broke for huge yardage, leading to a touchdown within the first five plays of the set.
While the Spartan secondary managed a few pass breakups, defensive consistency remained elusive against Cotter’s power running game, which yielded a second rushing touchdown later in the session. SCL made key stops toward the end of the set, but the defensive tape highlighted clear areas for growth—specifically tightening up zone coverage and sharpening run-gap discipline.
Overall, the scrimmage offered plenty of encouragement for the Spartans as they head into the 2026 campaign. SCL’s offense demonstrated balanced potential both through the air and on the ground, proving they can generate explosive plays in multiple ways. On defense, while playmaking flashes were present, establishing a stout run defense and instilling confidence in a young secondary will be top priorities on the practice field this week.
SCL will use these valuable film studies to make final roster decisions and tactical refinements before stepping into true competition. The Spartans officially open their regular season on Friday, September 4, when they travel to face off against the NRHEG Panthers.
