A steady stream of local residents filled Eagle Lake City Hall on Sept. 2 as the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office (BECSO) hosted its inaugural Back-to-School Drive and community cookout. Within the first hour of the event, the small dining hall was packed with families, community members, and local leaders gathering for food, fun, and school supply support.
The drive marked the first official social gathering of its kind hosted by BECSO since the department officially stationed at Eagle Lake City Hall in January 2024. Following a smaller open house hosted last year, deputies and staff were eager to expand their outreach and build stronger direct ties with the community they serve.
Welcoming attendees were several key law enforcement leaders, including Sheriff Wersal, Chief Deputy Brennan, Lieutenant Gahler, and Emergency Management Director Weller. They were joined by Eagle Lake City Administrator Jennifer Bromeland, Mayor John Whitington, and several members of the City Council.
The gathering offered residents a relaxed setting to meet the officers and officials dedicated to protecting their city. Young children eagerly approached law enforcement officers to shake hands and chat, while others timidly introduced themselves before scurrying off to grab a snack or check out the activity stations.
Outside, officers traded their patrol gear for aprons and tongs to handle grilling duties. Lt. Gahler took the first shift at the grill, turning out perfectly crisp hot dogs, before Chief Deputy Brennan stepped in to keep the grill going.
While the humble menu featured simple classics—hot dogs, burgers, chips, and cookies—the event was far more about community connection than fine dining. To help combat a late-summer heatwave, BECSO staff set up a root beer float station nearby, which quickly became a popular stop for attendees of all ages. For younger kids, a creative corner stocked with coloring books and pencils offered a quiet space to draw.
Despite the scorching weather, BECSO leadership and city officials expressed gratitude for the strong turnout and warm reception from the neighborhood. The success of the inaugural Back to School Drive underscores a strong mutual bond between Eagle Lake residents and their local law enforcement team—one that both sides hope to build on for years to come.
