After a challenging stretch that saw the Spartans surrender 67 runs in a single week, their recent play shows promise that their fighting spirit hasn’t dimin ished. SCL returned to form this week with a display of offensive pyrotechnics and late-game grit, pulverizing the MVL Chargers in a doubleheader sweep followed by dramatic 9-8 comeback victory against the Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s (SESM) Knights on Senior Night.
The Doubleheader: A Power Surge against the Chargers–The Spartans entered the April 28 doubleheader against MVL looking to snap out of a hitting slump. They did more than just snap out of it—they supercharged their bats, outscoring the Chargers 34-7 across two games. The tone was set early by Payton Blount, who emerged as the star slugger of the afternoon. Blount finished 2-for-3 with two home runs, including a tower ing no-doubt-it blast. Supporting the effort were Avery Wilmes, Gabi Cousins, and Braxton Breezee, who combined for eight hits and seven RBIs.
The Spartans held a 5-0 lead through three innings, but a massive seven-run fourth inning—fueled by Blount’s power—effectively stunned the Chargers en route to a 16-6 victory. After a brief intermission, the offensive onslaught continued. The Spartans hung 10 runs in the first inning alone, highlighted by yet another Blount home run. Madison Winkler added three runs and an RBI, while Melanie Davis drove in two in an SCC matchup that ended after four with an 18-1 score. The victory provided a collective sigh of relief for an SCL dugout that had been looking to hand out punishment on the basepaths rather than receiving it.
Senior Night Thriller: SCL 9, SESM 8–On May 1, SCL hosted the Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s Knights for an emotional Senior Night. Before the first pitch, Coach Sander offered a heartfelt thank you to the seniors, many of whom also play under her in the volleyball program.
The game itself was a seesaw battle that tested the Spartans’ newfound momentum. After the Knights took an early 1-0 lead in the first, the Spartans responded immediately. Braxton Breezee used her speed to beat out a slap hit then steal second, setting up a Winkler RBI double. SCL capitalized on shaky fielding over at third base to seize a 3-1 advantage; however, control issues by S. Brekke on the mound plagued the second inning. The Spartan ace plunked two and issued walks that allowed the Knights to storm back with a four-run frame, taking a 5-3 lead. The Spartan bats went cold for several innings as the Knights’ off-speed pitches tied them in knots, but this group found its footing in the later frames.
Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the top of the order began to stir. St. Peter delivered a clutch hit up the middle to drive in two runs, bringing SCL within one run. SESM added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth as some well-hit grounders sneaked by St. Peter at third. S. Brekke stopped the bleeding with two strikeouts in the frame. The drama peaked in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 8-5, the Spartans loaded the bases behind a perfect bunt from Breezee and a walk by Blount. With the game on the line, Wilmes proved her status as a clutch hitter, drilling a shot to center field to knot the game at 8-8. S. Brekke then redeemed her earlier pitching struggles by slicing a go-ahead RBI single past third base to make it 9-8. In the top of the seventh, the Knights put a runner in scoring position following a rare Blount error at short. However, Brekke remained composed, inducing a flyout to center and a grounder to St. Peter at third to seal the comeback victory for SCL.
The Spartans are now on a three-game winning streak as they enter the final stretch of the season. “Finding success is sweet,” Coach Sander told her team following the thrilling victory, “but true success is defined by being able to repeat it.” SCL heads into hostile territory this week for a road doubleheader against LSH on May 5, followed by a matchup against Madelia on May 7.
