Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s homecoming began with a bang on Monday, September 29, as the seniors enjoyed the sunrise together over breakfast at the JWP football field. But the main event everyone was waiting for was the crowning of homecoming king and queen. Out of all the candidates, Brielle James was crowned queen with Caleb Quast serving as the homecoming king.
Along with James, the other members of the homecoming court are Tiera Anderson, Katie Olson, Lily Quast, and Nevaeh Weimert. Representing the boys are King Quast, Aiden Cummins, Dylan Hood, Rocco Scholl, and Michael Walker. Class Attendants included Marin Demarais and Blake Neegaard, 7th grade; Aubrey Anderson and Brydon Olson, 8th; freshmen Lyric Morgan and James Morgan; sophomores Avery Carda and Tyson Kronbach; and juniors Grace Sanny and Trenton Huber. Crown Bearers for this year’s homecoming were Lyda Quast and Huxley Weimert.
As is tradition, a queen and king candidate also gets a chance to win Mr. and Mrs. Lips, which the JWP FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) sponsors. Candidates pucker up with red lipstick and kiss a piece of paper, and the high schoolers vote on who has the best lips. This year’s Mrs. Lips is Tiera Anderson, with Aiden Cummins joining her as Mr. Lips.
While another tradition in years past was a guessing game, which revealed some fun facts about the candidates, that didn’t happen this year. Instead, they allocated more time for the clubs and sports teams to share information about their seasons and upcoming events. The cheerleaders opened the coronation with a cheer, starting with the school song, and performing one of the numbers they regularly do at football games.
While also sharing their respective seasons so far, the cross country, volleyball, and football teams auctioned off items. The football team had a football with everyone’s signature on it to offer, and they had a $150 bid on it. Someone was eager to get the cross-country jersey signed by the members because bidding started at $10 and quickly rose to $50, which ultimately became the winning bid. The volleyball team had a banner sell for $170, the highest amount on the night. The FFA also auctioned two t-shirts with members’ names on them and sold them for $65.
Following the coronation was powderpuff football. We will include highlights from that event in our larger homecoming write-up in next week’s paper.
The students are continuing to show their pride through dress-up days and additional games and events that will help determine who wins the spirit cup this year. A parade will follow the pep fest at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, October 3. Everyone is welcome to attend the parade.
