Despite a chilly and breezy day, many observers were at the Waseca Sleigh and Cutter’s Third Annual Kite Show on Saturday, February 24. Estimates of the total number of visitors to the kite show were about 2,000.
As has happened to most Waseca Sleigh and Cutter events this year, the kite show was moved away from the lake (due to a lack of ice) to the soccer practice fields behind the Waseca Intermediate School. The show went on from noon to 5 p.m.
The show featured plenty of kites and balloon figures ranging from the standard run-of-the-mill kite that kids and their parents flew to gargantuan-sized animals. When the sun was out, and the sky was clear, a dolphin figure flying high looked like it was in the ocean.
The event was put on by Great American Kites and Events, a company based in Missouri that puts on kite events throughout the Midwest every year. It started when Sleigh and Cutter Director Ken Borgmann saw one of their shows in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Later on in the evening, the Sleigh and Cutter held its fireworks display on the nearby high school football field.
Waseca Sleigh and Cutter will wrap up its 74th annual festival with a Children’s Dream Catcher fundraiser at the Starfire Event Center on Saturday, March 2. On the same day, the Waseca Beer and Winemaking Club will host Wayne Breitbarth Memorial Bockfest at the Waseca American Legion from 4-10 p.m. The last event will be “Flags for Vets – Ruck of Hope” on Saturday, March 30.
