Tailgating was already in full swing early in the parking lot of the JWP Athletic Complex on Friday evening, but underneath the festive atmosphere, the distinct tension of small-town rivals hung thick in the autumn air.
Separated by just ten miles along Highway 14, the St. Clair/Loyola Spartans (SCL) and the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (JWP) Bulldogs met on the gridiron for a Week 2 showdown. Both teams entered the night 0-1 and eager to turn their fortunes around. More than just a mark in the win column was on the line: the coveted Sandbag Trophy, the annual symbol of local bragging rights and rivalry supremacy, was up for grabs.
When the final horn sounded, it was the Spartans who celebrated on their rival’s home turf, riding a punishing 238-yard ground attack and crucial second-half adjustments to a thrilling 24-21 victory.
Trading Blows in the First Half
SCL set the tone immediately on the opening kickoff, as Ashton Wilmes delivered a massive return to set up the Spartans in prime field position. Relying heavily on their physical ground game, the Spartans marched down the field with Blake McClinton picking up a key third-down conversion and Wilmes breaking off a 12-yard scamper.
Faced with a fourth-and-goal near the JWP goal line, quarterback Sam Freitag called his own number on a keeper, muscling through for just enough yardage to reset the downs before plowing into the end zone on the very next snap. Freitag then connected with McClinton, who dove over the pile for the two-point conversion to give SCL an early 8-0 lead.
The Bulldogs wasted no time responding. Though Spartan defender Christian Barker recorded a sack on the opening defensive snap, JWP quarterback Seth Dahlberg answered with a precise aerial assault. Capitalizing on big chunk plays through the air, JWP quickly matched the Spartans, scoring on a deep pass to bring the score to 8-7.
The second quarter saw the Bulldogs continue to test the Spartan secondary. While SCL defensive end Steven Loeffler and the line contained short screen and swing passes, JWP converted a critical fourth-and-4 with a zipped touchdown pass to Gavin Bauer, taking a 13-8 lead into halftime.
Halftime Adjustments Pay Off
Trailing 13-8 at the break, Spartan coaches made vital secondary adjustments, preaching deeper coverage and discipline to keep JWP’s deep passes in front of them.
The defensive tweaks yielded immediate results in the third quarter. After forcing a three-and-out on JWP’s opening drive, the Spartans weathered a quick exchange of turnovers—a Bulldog interception by Bauer immediately answered on the next snap by a clutch pick from SCL defensive back Bram Godfrey.
Taking advantage of the sudden shift in momentum, Freitag orchestrated a rapid strike. Displaying his signature toughness, Freitag escaped pressure on a designed run before slinging a drag route to Eli Sieberg, who turned on the jets for a 38-yard touchdown dash. Wilmes added the two-point conversion on an option play, vaulting SCL back into the lead, 16-13.
Defensively, the Spartans clamped down. Pressure from Loeffler, Barker, and Brody McClinton disrupted JWP’s tempo, while Wilmes delivered a massive breakup on fourth down to deny the Bulldogs deep in Spartan territory.
Icing the Game in the Fourth
Heading into the final frame, Blake McClinton ignited the offense with a dynamic, tackle-breaking run into Bulldog territory. Facing fourth down near the goal line, Freitag surged forward on a QB sneak for the score. Godfrey took the direct snap on the two-point try and darted into the end zone, pushing the Spartan lead to 24-13 with under nine minutes remaining.
JWP refused to go quietly. Dahlberg showed remarkable toughness, leading a heroic drive through pressure and injuries to connect with Bauer on a screen touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion, pulling the Bulldogs within three points at 24-21 with 4:20 on the clock.
With the outcome hanging in the balance, the Spartans leaned on their physical offensive line and ground game to drain the clock. After forcing JWP to burn all three of its timeouts, SCL faced a decisive fourth-and-6 with the game on the line. Rather than punting, Freitag took the snap himself, bulldozing through Bulldogs to push past the line to gain, securing the first down and icing the victory.

The matchup will take place on Mankato Loyola’s campus, where the team will celebrate their co-op brethren’s Homecoming in front of a packed home crowd.
