The Eagle Lake American Legion was filled with radiant smiles, proud families, and a deep sense of community spirit on Sunday, July 12, as the annual Tator Days Coronation officially kicked off a week of celebration.
The evening showcased three exceptional Miss Eagle Lake candidates: Khloe Won, Sylvia Zeldenrust, and Nhyira Opoku. All sophomores at St. Clair High School, the three young women stood adorned in elegant evening gowns, beaming with pride before a packed crowd of grandparents, siblings, and local supporters snapping photos. Sponsored by generous local businesses, each candidate shared a deep appreciation for Eagle Lake’s tight-knit charm and expressed a heartfelt desire to represent their hometown over the coming year.
Co-Master of Ceremonies Brittney Schloesser and Colleen Bidwell of the Tator Days Committee guided the crowd through an evening that proved these candidates possess far more than pageantry poise—they possess a genuine desire to make a difference.
As part of their bid for the crown, the candidates collaborated on a vital community impact project designed to give back to local youth: Teen Night. Scheduled for Monday, July 13, from 5:30 to 9:00 PM, this free event aims to bring local teenagers together for an evening of summer fun, complete with pizza, ice cream, and karaoke.
The candidates reflected on the inspiration behind the project, sharing personal and moving insights into the struggles of today’s youth:
- Khloe Won emphasized the importance of face-to-face interaction. “I want to be able to bring teenagers closer together,” she shared. “It is hard to find friends in this fast-paced world, so an evening of interaction and entertainment can go a long way.”
- Nhyira Opoku, who moved to Minnesota in 2022 from Ghana, Africa, spoke from personal experience about the isolation of being the new kid in town. Pointing to a sobering statistic, she noted that only 59% of teenagers feel they receive quality emotional and social support, highlighting a modern “loneliness epidemic.” “I wondered who my neighbors were and if there were friends my age age,” Opoku reflected. “Teen Night is about unifying local youth through games, bonding, pizza, and prizes to help those seeking togetherness and connection.”
- Sylvia Zeldenrust delivered an emotional testimony regarding the heavy social pressures today’s teens face, particularly the fear of missing out. “Teenagers are under constant fear of FOMO,” Zeldenrust explained. “But a new change in activity can introduce you to a new group of friends and opportunities. We want to contribute however we can to strengthen friendships and gain new ones.”
When asked what would make them most proud to represent Eagle Lake if crowned, the candidates’ answers further reflected their strong values. Zeldenrust expressed a desire to spread her faith, Opoku spoke of wanting to serve as a strong role model to pay back the community that warmly welcomed her family, and Won highlighted the unique power of the crown to foster deep, local connections.
Before the big announcement, the stage was handed over to the youngest members of the Tator Days royalty. Nine adorable Little Miss Tator Tot candidates and two dapper Mr. Fry Guy candidates made their way to the stage.
While the young ladies wore frilly, princess-worthy dresses, the young men looked exceptionally sharp in slacks and ironed shirts. Some of the little ones giggled and swayed back and forth with charming timidity, while others relished the crowd’s attention. Members of the audience smiled as they learned fun facts about each little spud, including their favorite foods, dream superpowers, future occupations, beloved pets, and favorite summer activities.
Reigning Little Miss Tator Tot Madelyn had the honor of drawing the names of the new junior royalty:
- Little Miss Tator Tot: Davida Ross
- Mr. Fry Guy: Luke Jimenez
Both were adorned with their official crowns and sashes to enthusiastic applause.
The climax of the evening arrived as the court for Miss Eagle Lake was officially announced.
Sylvia Zeldenrust was named Miss Congeniality, voted on by her peers for her warmth and kindness. Zeldenrust was also named Second Attendant, with Khloe Won taking the honors as First Attendant.
Then came the grand announcement: the title of Miss Eagle Lake was awarded to Nhyira Opoku.
An expression of pure awe and amazement washed over Opoku’s face as the crown was placed on her head. In an incredibly humble moment, she took her first official walk as royalty, offering heartfelt thanks to her parents, the judges, the Tator Days Committee, and her fellow pageant mates for embracing her and making her a vital part of this community.
Along with the crown, Opoku receives a scholarship to support her future education. Over the next year, the newly crowned Miss Eagle Lake and her court will represent the community at parades, local celebrations, and public events.
As the night concluded, MCs Schloesser and Bidwell expressed their immense pride in all the candidates, noting that their dedication, vulnerability, and passion beautifully reflect the very best of the Eagle Lake community.
