The second round of the Gopher Conference Tournament took place on Thursday, May 7th, under some of the most favorable conditions of the spring season. All eight conference schools gathered at the North Links Golf Course in Mankato, with the putting green serving as the central hub for a day of high-stakes competition.
Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (JWP) was well-represented, competing alongside rivals from Triton, United South Central, and NRHEG. The Bulldogs’ top seeds, Jeffrey Simonson and Evan Mulcahey, were paired in a competitive group that included top talent from the Rebels and Panthers.
This day was particularly special for Simonson, who celebrated his birthday by gifting his best performance of the season. Playing as the Bulldogs’ first seed, he finished the round tied for third in the overall rankings. He carded a 159, marking Par for the course.
His consistency was the story of the day, as he recorded eight pars and five bogeys. However, it was his aggressive play on the pins that turned heads; Simonson sank five birdies, occurring on Holes 1, 6, 11, 15, and 17. This performance showed significant growth from his first-round appearance and provided a festive atmosphere for the JWP alumni and families following the group.
Mulcahey, JWP’s second seed, faced a challenging day wrought with bogeys; however, he demonstrated the composure of a veteran. Despite the difficulty of the course, he limited the damage to only three double bogeys. Supported by Coach James, the Freshman maintained a steady pace throughout the early game, proving why he is a vital part of the Bulldogs’ rotation as they head toward the postseason.
As a team, JWP placed fifth in the contest. This round marks the official halfway point of a season that has been defined by a steady upward trajectory. The Bulldogs are currently drawing inspiration from the program’s successful State appearances in the early 2020s, aiming to recapture that magic as the stakes increase.
The results from this round will heavily influence the seeding for the final tournament day. The quest for State qualification continues shortly, as the Bulldogs look to climb the leaderboard and secure their spots among the top golfers in the conference.
