The halls of St. Clair were filled with the echoes of intense drama, witty humor, and poignant storytelling this weekend as the school hosted the “Cyclone Spectacular” speech meet on March 14. Welcoming 21 schools to their home turf, the St. Clair speech team delivered a powerhouse performance, ultimately being crowned South Central Conference Champions.
In the overall tournament standings, St. Clair secured a prestigious third-place finish, successfully breaking a tie with Loyola through a higher count of first-place rankings.
The veteran leadership of Olivia McGowan and William Wellmann was on full display as both speakers secured double-finalist honors and individual championships.
McGowan dominated the Prose category with a harrowing performance centered on the cyclical nature of addiction and peer pressure. McGowan portrayed a teen spiraling from party drinks to the grotesque physical and mental consequences of illicit substances. Judges noted her exceptional ability to “pop” between characters and balance raw emotion with disciplined body language. McGowan took first place in Prose and fifth place in Extemp Reading.
William Wellmann showcased his incredible range by taking first place in Humorous and third place in Drama. In the Drama final, Wellmann moved the audience with a high-intensity portrayal of a desperate father fighting for his son’s life support, only to reveal a tragic truth of generational violence. His transition from blind fury to soul-crushing guilt was described as a highlight of the final round.
It was a strong showing in the interpretative categories for St. Clair as two other Cyclones performed exceptionally well. Zoe Johnson was a double-finalist, taking second place in Storytelling and sixth place in Poetry. Paxton Haala delivered a strong performance in Poetry, earning third place.
The Cyclone Spectacular proved that the future of St. Clair speech is bright, with several newcomers making their mark in the novice divisions. Will Spence, competing in his first-ever meet for St. Clair, broke into the novice finals for Discussion, earning a commendable third place. Reese Mueller impressed the judges in Novice Humorous, securing third place. Wesley Clabo also took home third place in Novice Original Oratory.
It was an exceptional day of competitive speech at the Cyclone Spectacular with the home team earning top-three honors and another SCC Title to their mantle. Their next meet will have them in familiar territory as Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton hosts their own home meet on March 21.
