As their regular season enters its final week of competition, the Lady Cyclones have earned a significant accolade to hang in the rafters: Co-Champions of the South Central Conference.
While the title is a testament to a dominant season, the final stretch proved a gauntlet. Dropping two of their last three games, St. Clair found themselves battling inconsistent shooting from the floor—a cold spell that plagued them in losses to NRHEG and LCWM, despite a high-octane offensive showing against Blue Earth.
The week began on a high note on February 9 against Blue Earth Area. In a game defined by pace and pressure, the Cyclones outgunned the Buccaneers 84-66.
St. Clair’s signature full-court press paid immediate dividends. Hinze opened the scoring by swiping an inbounds pass for a layup, setting the tone for a first-half deluge. Whether it was Quast finishing on the break or Winkler plucking steals at mid-court, the Cyclones were relentless.
Leading by double digits, St. Clair unleashed a perimeter barrage. Daly sparked the second unit with a transition three, followed by long-range strikes from Meng and Quast. When BEA attempted a second-half surge to pull within striking distance, Mathiowetz silenced the home crowd with a deep three to anchor the lead. Hinze finished with a game-high 28 points, supported by Meng (19) and Mathiowetz (16).
The momentum hit a wall on February 10 against the NRHEG Panthers. Known for their physical, punishing brand of basketball, the Panthers turned the contest into a defensive slugfest that St. Clair struggled to navigate, eventually falling 49-79.
From the opening tip, points were at a premium. Drives to the basket were met with heavy resistance, and perimeter shooters found themselves smothered. The Cyclones were never able to establish their rhythm against the imposing NRHEG squad. Mathiowetz and Hinze led the scoring with 15 points apiece in the losing effort.
After a few days to recuperate, the Cyclones hosted LCWM on February 14 for what would become an instant classic. With St. Clair having beaten the Knights by 32 earlier in the season, LCWM arrived with a chip on their shoulder and a chance to force a tie for the conference crown.
The first half was a nightmare for the home team. LCWM’s zone defense acted like a lid on the basket, holding St. Clair to a staggering two field goals in the first 18 minutes. Relying almost entirely on the free-throw line for points, the Cyclones fell behind 38-21 at the break.
However, the second half saw a completely different Cyclone squad.
Hinze took over the game, single-handedly outscoring the Knights for a stretch to cut into the lead. A “Brooklyn-to-Brooklin” connection fueled a 14-6 run that electrified the home crowd. When Mathiowetz buried a triple to make it 46-41, the comeback seemed inevitable.
The final five minutes were a chaotic exchange of three-pointers. Daly was a spark plug off the bench, nailing three triples—including a bank shot—to keep the Cyclones alive. Meng added back-to-back threes to bring St. Clair within four points at the 4:30 mark.
Despite a late five-point swing from Hinze and Mathiowetz to bring the score to 73-68, exhaustion had set in and the Cyclones couldn’t get the final stops they needed. Hinze fouled out in the closing minute after a Herculean 33-point performance, but all for naught as St. Clair conceded the game 79-74, resulting in a split of the SCC Title with their rivals. Meng & Daly scored 12 points each.
Though the loss to LCWM resulted in a shared South Central Conference championship, the second-half grit shown by St. Clair provides a silver lining heading into the final week of competition. If the Lady Cyclones can pair the defensive pressure seen against Blue Earth with the resilience shown in the LCWM comeback, they remain a dangerous threat as the postseason looms.
