The story of the Nativity has been at the center of Christianity since its beginnings. The story of Jesus’s birth is something that Christians hold sacred as the real meaning of Christmas.
What better way to tell a classic Christmas story than through a live retelling?
Members of the Trinity Lutheran School worked together for a live Nativity play on Wednesday, December 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Students from K-8 participated in the Nativity scenes.
The story began near the entrance to the Discipling Center from the church sanctuary. It was an interactive part of the Nativity story, which took the audience through a marketplace. Several students acted as merchants trying to sell fish and vegetables. The attendants were also asked to donate by “paying their taxes.” Narrators then guided the group throughout the rest of the tour.
After that, the main hall of the Discipling Center served as the place for the first scene, where Mary tells Joseph that she’s pregnant with God’s son. The church kitchen was the location for the inn in Bethlehem, where Mary and Joseph slept away in a manger.
The crowd of attendants was brought outside, where there was a stable and the light of the stars surrounding a group of angels celebrating the birth of Jesus. The crowd was then brought back inside for the final scenes featuring the three wise men presenting Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus with gifts of incense, gold, and myrrh.
The sanctuary was a waiting point for attendants to get their turn to see the students tell the story of Jesus’s birth. The pews were nearly full of attendants excited to see the Nativity. About a dozen groups were split to ensure everyone had the best interactive experience possible.
While groups waited, a concert was performed by the younger members of the Trinity Lutheran School. They performed twice – once in the beginning and another time less than an hour later. In between the concert performances, there was also a video of another Trinity band and choir concert shown on a projector in the front.
It was a great experience to see the students share the story of the live Nativity. Several attendants enjoyed watching the retelling of the classic story while the younger students did a fantastic job in their concert performance.
