Waldorf was a pretty busy place on Friday, August 23. Two events were happening around the same time: an Antique Car and Truck Show and a corn and burger feed hosted by the Waldorf Fire and Rescue.
The Antique Car and Truck Show featured several contestants from around the area and unique cars, from a little red Corvette to a Chevrolet truck restored from its original 1989 parts.
As of about 5:15 p.m., 40 vehicles participated in the show, with more that arrived as we collected the total tally. “The weather is great,” commented Waldorf Mayor Rob Wilkening. “We had a great turnout.”
The fire department’s corn and burger feed was even busier. Before the doors to the Waldorf Community Center officially opened for the event at 5:30 p.m., the line was already going out the door. Fire Chief Mark McDonough and the crew working the grill estimated about 650 attendants, a slight increase from last year.
Much of the proceeds from the corn and burger feed will go toward supporting Carrie Ferch, a member of the fire department who has served for over two decades and has been battling cancer.

After the corn and burger feed, the residents of Waldorf were treated to a dance with music provided by Red Dirt Road from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.
Two raffles were held during the evening. Winners were announced during the dance’s intermission and on Facebook.
50/50 raffle winter was Jimmy Raimann. The Waldorf Fire Relief Association Green Ticket Raffle winners were as follows: 1st place $5000: Tyler Hansen; 2nd place $1500: Nate Kristo; 3rd place $1000: Brent Schubbe; 4th place: $750: Nick Watse; 5th place: $500: Josh Toquam; 6th place: $500: Matt Allen; 7th place: $500: Tom Traynor; 8th place: $250: John Koziolek; 9th place: $250: Bob Holmes; 10th place: $250: Greg Roesler; and 11th place: $250: Jason Weller.
It was a fun time for Waldorf residents and visitors to the community. You can’t go wrong with a burger, corn on the cob, and a dance. And Mayor Wilkening was right: it was the perfect weather for a small-town gathering.
