The road to victory is only ten miles long for the St. Clair/Loyola (SCL) Spartans and the Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (JWP) Bulldogs, but on opening day, the distance between these two rivals felt much closer. In a classic backyard showdown defined by familiar faces and fierce competitive drives, the Spartans kicked off their season with a gritty 8-5 win. While friendly chatter peppered the early innings, the atmosphere sharpened as the sun dipped low, turning a neighborhood meeting into a high-stakes battle of wills.
At the heart of the Spartans’ defense was a rare family connection: the Brekke sisters. With Stella commanding the circle and Hannah calling the shots behind the plate, the sibling duo put on a masterclass in coordination. Stella’s precision kept the Bulldogs off-balance throughout the evening, racking up seven strikeouts in a winning performance that proved the sisters’ chemistry translates from the dinner table to the softball diamond.
The game remained scoreless through the first two frames. In the top of the second, a great slide briefly put a Bulldog runner in scoring position, but Winkler at center delivered a heads-up play, picking her off trying to race to third.
At the plate, the Spartans struggled to find their offensive rhythm early, stranding runners in both the second and third innings despite a disciplined walk by Aubree Mathiowetz and a towering triple by Payton Blount.
JWP broke the ice in the third inning. A walk followed by a liner to center put pressure on the Spartans. While First baseman Avery Wilmes recorded an out on a soft dribbler, a Bulldog runner crossed the plate to make it 1-0. Another knock got past the infield shortly after, extending the JWP lead to 2-0 before S. Brekke scooped a grounder to stop the bleeding.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans’ offense finally ignited. Haddie Jobe sparked the rally with a perfectly placed bunt single, promptly stealing second. Braxton Breezee followed with a slap hit to put runners on the corners. The big blow came from Blount, who drove a clutch shot to center field, scoring both runners to tie the game. Moments later, Paige St. Peter smacked a ball to short; a slight hesitation by the defense allowed her to beat the throw while Blount made a heads-up baserunning play to slide home for the 3-2 lead.
The Spartans didn’t stop there. After a bunt by S. Brekke led to a throwing error, two more runs crossed the plate. Mathiowetz capped the six-run outburst with a sacrifice fly, giving SCL a commanding 6-2 advantage.
But the Bulldogs didn’t go away quietly. Capitalizing on a few miscommunications and wild pitches in the top of the sixth, JWP bit back with three runs to trim the lead to 6-5. However, Blount ended the late-game dramatics by catching a runner in a pickle and applying the tag at second.
In the bottom of the sixth, the “three-swing combo” of Winkler, Blount, and St. Peter added critical insurance runs for the Spartans. Blount and St. Peter both delivered RBI hits to push the lead to 8-5 heading into the final frame.
S. Brekke closed the door in the seventh, inducing a flyout to Jobe in left field to secure the season-opening 8-5 victory for the Spartans.
Following the victory, Coach Sander spoke of S. Brekke’s performance on the mound, “I thought shepitched a great game. She kept the hitters on their toes and moved the ball well throughout the zone.” Offensively, the Spartan’s key players stepped up to turn the tide in the home team’s favor, “Payton Blount was huge at the plate tonight. She stepped up at key times and got us back on top. Paige St. Peter also had a great double to push those extra runs in.”
Sander added, “It’s nice to get that first game under our belts. It was great to see the girls battle and never give up.”
It’s always important for a team to experience the thrill of victory early in the season, and the Spartans showed resilience in a late-inning triumph over the rival Bulldogs. A Spring Break puts their season on a brief hiatus, but they’ll return to the field on April 9 against Cleveland.
