The road Class 2A State tournament was paved with grit, sweat, and lightning-fast pins as the WEJW Grizzlies battled through the Section tournament on February 21.
When the dust settled on the mats, five Grizzlies emerged as State qualifiers, highlighting a weekend of tactical brilliance and physical dominance.
The headlines belonged to Murphy (139) and Gruber (152), both of whom secured Section Championships in vastly different fashions. Murphy, entering with a formidable 31-7 record and a first-round bye, looked determined to prove his top ranking was no fluke. A 27-second dismantling in his semifinal match placed at center mat for the Championship bout; however, this clash of two immovable titans resembled a tactical masterpiece more than a brutish battle. In a contest where every inch of ground was earned, a calculated third-round escape provided the only two points of the match, clinching the title for Murphy.
Gruber’s path to the top was a display of technical versatility. After grinding out a 16-9 decision in his opener, he accelerated the pace, securing a pinfall in just 20 seconds in the semifinals. He capped off his weekend with a dominant 19-4 Technical Fall (TF) in the championship round to claim the 152-pound crown.
For Sheehy (215) and Huber (160), the path to State required resilience as both Grizzlies clawed their way through consolation to earn their State tickets. Sheehy blazed through his early bracket with a pair of commanding pinfalls. Despite a setback in the championship round, he remained composed, pinning Garlow of SCL in just 29 seconds to secure a definitive second-place finish and his spot at State. Huber’s journey was perhaps the most grueling. After an 11-3 Major Decision to open, he faced a formidable foe in SCL’s Vaughan. The two appeared evenly matched for much of the bout, but a second-round takedown secured a 6-3 victory. Huber would fall in the championship match, but clinched a high-pressure rematch against Vaughan to solidify second place and a State bid.
These four Grizzlies join Kayle Langford, who punched her ticket to State on February 7. The five State qualifiers will now prepare to represent the Grizzlies on the biggest stage in high school wrestling, carrying the momentum of a hard-fought Section tournament.
